Regulations and laws

Handrails and balustrades can be complicated in regards to what you can and can't do. We have answered some frequently asked questions to help.

What is the height my handrail can be?

Between 900-1000mm above toe of step to the top of rail.

Is there a difference between residential and commercial handrails?

Yes, in most cases for residential handrails you are required to have one handrail on a chosen side from bottom toe to top toe.

In most cases, commercial handrails are classed as ''accessible'' which stipulates continuous handrails both sides, with a 300mm horizontal extension to the rail at the start and end of all rails.

How high does my residential balustrade need to be?

A balustrade needs to be a minimum of 1000mm above the finished floor level, Commercial is slightly more complicated with regards to use so it best to get in touch with us early.

For your benefit we have attached the two New Zealand building regulation documents in PDF so you can easily find any further information you may need. If you have any further questions, please contact our helpful team.
